Our 4 Pillars

Black girls/Emerging Adults and Black nonbinary youth (BGEANY) exist, minimally, at the intersection of two historically excluded/marginalized identities. They are faced with existing in a world that centers the needs of their white, gender-conforming counterparts. In this, there is a failure to acknowledge the unique experiences of Black and Afro-Latinx girls and nonbinary youth, while simultaneously endorsing negative stereotypes that perpetuate misperceptions and mistreatment of them within systems and the larger society. The mission of LATI is to authentically provide space and education to and about BGEANY; helping to create a world in which they can do more than exist, and truly LIVE, thrive and be seen. We have chosen to utilize “living” to combat how BGEANY are often expected to make “living” synonymous with “surviving”. Yet, if we truly unpack the meaning of “living,” it is to thrive, flourish, and be provided the support and space to live life fully.

LATI seeks to address the needs of BGEANY through its 4 pillars.
